Here are a list of questions that we are frequently asked:

  • What visa do I require? Please check with your local embassy or travel agent as to the requirements.
     
  • What is the current exchange rate? Visit www.xe.com/ucc/ to find out all the latest exchange rates.
     
  • What credit cards are accepted in South Africa?Almost every shop will accept Visa, Master Card, American Express, among others.
     
  • Currency and foreign exchange - South Africa currency is measured in Rands and cents. There are 100 cents to the Rand; notes are issued in R200, R100, R50, R20, and R10 denominations, and coins in R5, R2, R1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 1c. For all foreign currency exchange, any commercial bank or other private Bureau de Change will be assisting you for the best rate. South Africa has a modern banking and commercial system and most shops and hotels will accept Credit Cards.
     
  • Language - South Africa has got 11 official languages. The 3 main languages spoken and studied at school are English/Xhosa/Afrikaans.

    I'm worried about the security in South Africa. Is it safe?Use common sense when you are out and about. Don't walk about at night alone.
     
  • Safety - We can't emphasise this enough: for the most part, South Africa is a friendly country and most South Africans would welcome tourists with open arms. For your security we recommend that you be guided most of the time.
     
  • V.A.T (value added tax) - V.A.T is currently at 14%. All goods and services are V.A.T inclusive. All receipts must be kept and presented at your international point of exit for refund; please note that refund is made only on presentation of goods purchased.
     
  • Climate Mediterranean weather
    • Winter: from April to August
    • Spring: September
    • Summer: October to February
    • Autumn: March
       
  • Tipping - Happy with the service? You are welcomed to tip your service provider with a minimum of 10-15% commission, eg. waiters, tour guides, hotel porters, taxi drivers
